Jennifer, tell us a bit about your experience in the preparedness industry.

I’ve been a prepper all of my life and just didn’t know that there was a name for people like me. I’ve always been someone who had a large amount of food storage, albeit not really organized, and someone who had everything but the kitchen sink in my handbag. Funny story, I was reading an article one day that I thought was about peppers (I love to garden when I get the chance). I have to tell you I’m the world’s worst speller and I read slow as well. If I were in school today I’d probably have some diagnosis for a learning disorder. Anyway, I started out reading this article that I thought was about peppers that ended up explaining all about preppers. I was really taken aback because I finally found a name for the type of person I was. So once I was able to put a label on part of my personality it was much easier to connect with others that felt the same way I did. My husband said I should create a blog about self-reliance so I did (you can find it here:  Are We Crazy or What?). Almost 3 years later it’s become a huge part of our lives. We love sharing with others and learning alongside of readers. Preparendess Binder1

Why did you create the Preparedness Planner?  What is it’s main purpose?

Honestly, I needed some way to keep track of my food storage and nothing out there really did the trick. I searched high and low for something that might work. I’ve always used a planner and in general I’ve preferred paper and pencil, especially in the kitchen or pantry.I have a background in graphics and page layout so I thought I’d just make my own. Then people started asking me for copies and I knew this might be something I should share with the public. Preparedness Binder 2

How long did it take you to put together this planner?

The research took about 3 months. The actual page layout took about 1 month. Each supplemental smaller edition takes about 1 month.

What is your favorite part of the planner?

The food storage part is my favorite. It’s the heart of the planner and it’s the part I needed to create to help me organize and feel good about my food storage. Food storage can be so complicated for some people that they give up the practice. If you invest a little time organizing there are problems that can be avoided and you can keep your peace of mind by keeping your food storage. Preparedness Binder 3

Do you have any tips for someone just starting to use your planner?

Yes, you do not have to fill everything out at once. Take it step by step and print out the 3 month menu planning guide or maybe the inventory sheet. If you pick, for example, the 3 month menu planning guide, just concentrate on that for a few weeks or even months. Then move to the next phase. And you do not have to use everything in the planner to be in control of your preps. It’s flexible enough to adapt to your system. You do not need to adopt a prescribed system to use it successfully. Anything else you’d like us to know about your planner?

The Preparedness Planner was designed by someone who actually uses it. It was also designed for you to print out only the pages you will use. I hate pre-printed planners that come with pages that I won’t use. They end up being dead weight in my book. It’s a huge pet-peeve of mine. Did I mention I’m a little OCD?…..:) I’m a no frills kind of girl and while the pages aren’t ugly, per se, they are all functional and there is not a lot of space wasted with unnecessary graphics and artwork. I wanted to make this planner easy to print and easy to read.

Thank you Jennifer for your time today and for your amazing planner!
