Not only is it a great idea to have a Family Binder full of all the useful information that your family may need for a 72 hour period that includes personal papers, emergency numbers and other information, taking the next step to create a 72 hour emregency kit to keep you stocked with food, water, medicine, shelter and other sundries is equally important!
But where do you start? It seems so overwhelming to think of all the things you have to pack to make it 72 hours outside of your home, plus you have to make one for every member of your family. And what if you forget something crucial? And what is crucial and what’s just unncecessary?
Misty Marsh, of Your Own Home Store, has created a wonderful resource for you to create your emergency kit in just 26 steps. You can take them weekly or mark them off as quickly as you can.
In Your Own 72 Hr. Kit Plan, Misty breaks down the daunting task of creating a 72 hr. kit for your family into weekly chunks. Not only is this good for your time, but your budget, as well. You can proceed through the plan as quickly as you’d like and budget can afford. Most things are probably in your house/garage already, and you just have to fill in with extras.
What I love about Your Own 72 Hr Kit Plan
What I love so much about the book is how Misty gives you budget suggestions, images of what items are, and tips about how her family has implemented the plan for their life. It’s what makes the book more than just a list of things to accomplish, but a how-to for your family that is easy to follow!
And what if you’ve already gotten a start on your emergency kit and think you have no where to go? Misty suggests using the book to help you test, review and retool what you have to make it even better for your family.
My favorite tip from the book:
I recommend purchasing the package you will keep your 72 hour kit supplies in after you’ve gotten your supplies. I’ve found that when purchasing the package first, people often underestimate the amount of space they will need to hold all their supplies. Instead wait until you have all the supplies, then you will purchase a more size appropriate packaging system.
The only thing that would’ve made this book better was to have a printable in list format to print off separately to have on a clipboard with your products to keep track of what you have and have not purchased.
UPDATE: After approaching Misty about this today after I was done with the book, she thought it was a great idea and has updated the book with a printable checklist that you can keep with you to shop with, or keep with your supplies to keep track of what you have and haven’t purchased! Thanks for that, Misty!
What makes this book different than the rest?
Sure, you can collect a lot of ‘list’ information from the internet. But Misty gives you not only a list, but a how-to and a why for each week’s progression. You’re learning why these items are important and the correct way to use or store them. She educates on the proper use of bleach for water purification, the pro’s and con’s of water filtration systems and what her family does in real life. Each stage of the book is set up this way.
I don’t know about you, while I love having information available on the net to browse through, I appreciate having something in hand that I can mark, I can check off, and I can go back to again and again to make sure I’m ready. I’m still a book girl!
